Manageable Features: Focal Point software allows the user to enable and disable features incorporated into each of the media converter modules. Features currently available on Transition’s media converters include: AutoCross: A feature found on our Ethernet and Fast Ethernet media converters that automatically detects the type of UTP cable that is inserted into the RJ-45 port (straight-through or cross-over). The converter configures the RJ-45 port to either MDI or MDI-x to match the cable type eliminating the need to troubleshoot cable compatibility problems on the copper port. LinkAlert / Link Pass Through: LinkAlert was designed to make trouble-shooting a link failure simple. When the link on one side of the media converter fails it will also shut down the link on the opposite side of the converter to ensure that down link failures are reported properly. Far End Fault: Working integrally with Link Alert, Far End Fault ensures that link failures are reported to all devices on the network properly so that network problems can be diagnosed and corrected quickly. N-Way Auto-Negotiation: Fast Ethernet and 10/100 media converters have the ability to turn auto-negotiation on or off. If the RJ-45 port on the converter is connected to a 10/100 N-way device then auto-negotiation should be enabled to ensure the optimum mode (full duplex) and speed (100Mbps) are engaged. When a converter is connected to a standard 100Mbps device then auto-negotiation can be disabled and the mode can be set manually. It is important that auto-negotiation can be disabled in instances where you are connected to a 100Mbps only device to avoid having a mixed full and half duplex link (an auto-negotiating device connected to a non-auto-negotiating device can result in a half duplex link) Pause: Fast Ethernet and Gigabit converters are designed to allow this flow control feature to function unhindered between devices such as switches that are pause capable. Pause is a flow control option that was designed into high speed networking devices to enable them to alert the transmitting device that the receiving device is being overwhelmed with data. The receiving device can instruct the transmitting device to to briefly discontinue transmission so that it can effectively “catch up”.
